Normally, the principle of good design is that form follows function. But here, as in so many ways, the BMW 7 Series High Security is an exception. The security functions are designed around the form of the standard model.

This ensures the vehicle is as discreet as possible, and that the overall harmony of the design – the dynamic proportions, the sculptural surfaces, the incomparably elegant lines – remains unaffected. By using a special manufacturing process, BMW has been able to reduce the number of separate armour components needed by around 20 per cent. The armour plates are made from an incredibly strong special steel, and fit the bodywork of the car like a second skin.

The custom-manufacturing process also means that the airbags can stay in their usual places, so the sense of space inside the vehicle is as uncompromised as passenger security.
